New semester, new Webnet meetings. Let's tackle the big issues:
September 19 Webnet meeting: Usability, User-centered Design and IT Services
Speakers: Ian Crew, Information Services and Technology -- Data
Services, and Allison Bloodworth, Office of the CIO -- Technology
Program Office
Users' experiences of any IT service are primarily shaped by their
abilities and what is presented to them on their computer or mobile
device. This talk will introduce some of the basic concepts of
usability and user-centered design and how they can help create IT
services that are easier and more satisfying to use. We will cover
some simple techniques to make your services more user-friendly.
Additionally, we will talk about how effective usability requires a
focus on the complete system from the user's point of view. As
services combine multiple systems, we cannot rely on the suppliers of
those systems to ensure that users find the resulting interface
simple to comprehend or easy to use. Using these user-centered design
techniques to develop a service adds value by reducing the burden on
support desks and enhancing productivity.
WHEN: Tuesday, September 19, noon to 1:30
WHERE: 303 Doe Library
WHO'S INVITED: You. Anyone on the UCB campus interested in web site usability
Webnet is a voluntary organization for UCB folks to discuss
World-Wide Web related issues. For more information on webnet and its
