Job Description:
The School of Public Health Office of External Relations and
Development comprises all activities related to public information,
fundraising, constituent relations, and governmental relations.
Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Web Editor has
primary responsibility for implementing and developing the External
Relations unit's web and electronic communications. Duties include
day-to-day maintenance tasks as well as larger creative projects. The
Web Editor is responsible for content editing, coding, technical
problem-solving, and basic graphic production using standardized
graphic templates and style guides.

Responsibilities:
Content Development (45%)
As a key member of a small communications team, participate in
planning and brainstorming for the School's external electronic
publications, including the School of Public Health's external web
site, Public Health Heroes web site, and monthly electronic
newsletter.
*Develop strategies for maximizing use of electronic media to
publicize and market the School to external audiences.
*Translate content from print publications into effective web layouts.
* Make regular, immediately viewable updates and additions to the
School of Public Health web site.

Design and Production (45%)
Using a variety of software packages, enhance existing graphic
designs for web pages, which may include page layouts, color schemes,
typography, icons, buttons and illustrations.
*Drawing on knowledge of Web usability, design effective and engaging
user interfaces for Web sites.
*Assess the technical issues of all proposed projects, including use
of outside vendors; estimate timelines and required resources.
*Create HTML-formatted electronic event invitations for e-mail broadcast.
*Prepare and optimize digital photos for the Web. Use digital camera
to produce photos when needed. Assist in maintenance of External
Relations digital image library.
*Use knowledge of Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator to create
low-bandwidth interactive graphics that illustrate and enhance
articles to be published as part of the SPH site.
* Troubleshoot web-related problems. Identify and correct bugs in web
pages and sites.
*Design web pages and PowerPoint screen presentations as needed for
School of Public Health events, such as the annual Public Health
Heroes Awards Ceremony and memorial services.
*Using Illustrator, create designs for giveaway items such as
keychains, pens, and cups.
*Provide additional Web-related technical services as needed. Work
within a variety of environments, including but not limited to Mac OS
and Windows NT.
*Code files to comply with current World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
recommendations and with ADA guidelines for disability access.

Misc. (10%)
*Keep abreast of emerging Web-based technologies and make
recommendations based on current knowledge. *Monitor statistics of
SPH web site hits and electronic newsletter click-throughs.
* Work with SPH intranet staff to ensure that the intranet and SPH
web site efforts complement one another.
*As required, serve on campus committees pertaining to web
communication, development, and policies.
*Monitor status of server accounts.
*Develop and maintain style guide for School web sites.
* Participate in External Relations staff meetings and planning retreats.
*Participate in the School's Communications Advisory Board meetings.
* May also provide consultation to individuals in various units at
the School who are responsible for division or center web sites.
*Other duties as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications:
Minimum 3 years' experience managing and producing a web site.
Extensive experience in developing and implementing content for the
Web and other multimedia communications, including e-mails and HTML
newsletters.
Comprehensive and up-to-date technical knowledge and skills, and
expert knowledge of web standards, web site architecture, and web
design principles. Familiarity with issues such as browser/platform
differences and incompatibilities.

Facility with HTML, cascading style sheets, and web site file
management. Experience with web publishing software such as GoLive.

Attention to detail. Strong organizational skills. Ability to work
under tight deadlines and to work on several tasks simultaneously.
Long-term planning as well as short-term time management skills to
ensure that the various components of projects undertaken come
together in a timely and productive way.

Must be able to balance independent work with teamwork and exercise
judgment on a daily basis with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience following style manuals/guides (Chicago preferred)
Experience with print design and production
Familiarity with CGI, PERL, JavaScript, Filemaker, Flash, and Quicktime.
Familiarity with UC Berkeley campus culture and editorial style
and/or experience working with health-related content.
