Aron,
I have been following the evolution of Ruby and Ajax for a while now but
the college is a Cold Fusion / Java shop and I do not see that changing
anytime soon. In my effort to learn Java the biggest stumbling block has
been its necessarily strong typing. With CF the typing is essentially non
existent, by comparison, which is the case with Ruby as I understand it.
That, coupled with the fact that it is open source is a big draw for me as
a programmer to be sure but as we have numerous applications running and
are otherwise seriously invested in CF the college will probably not be
shifting gears any time soon .
I do see Ruby on Rails, other open source tools and Web 2.0 generally as
the next step towards the inevitable simplification of web programming and
end user experience generally, something that was predicted to happen long
ago. IMHO, Java was / is perhaps a step in the wrong direction even though
it solved many problems and certainly is a generally solid replacement for
C, C++ and other languages. Unfortunately it is just as complex and a lot
to learn before becoming productive. That is the singular reason we went
with Cold Fusion, it is fast and easy just as Ruby on Rails appears to be
at least as far as typing goes, Ajax complexities are another issue.
So for me as a person who buys into the spirit of Web 2.0 and as a web
programmer I will be making an effort to learn and use Ruby on Rails but on
my own time.
