The e-Berkeley Program Office is accepting applications from all UC
Berkeley campus executive leaders and managers to participate in a half-day
project sponsorship course. The course will be conducted from 8:30 A.M. to
12:30 P.M. on Friday, December 10. A detailed description of the course is
listed below.

The e-Berkeley Office will pay the course fees for all participating
employee. However, there are only 15 spaces available in the course. If you
or a member of your staff would like to attend the course, please send me

e-Berkeley Effective Project Sponsorship Workshop Description

Introduction

The campus depends upon its executive leadership and managers to define,
develop, and complete its strategically important information technology
projects. Serving as a sponsor for one of these projects can be a daunting
task. The e-Berkeley Program Office will offer a four-hour workshop on
effective IT project sponsorship. The workshop will teach participants
about the most important principles and best practices needed for effective
project sponsorship The workshop will be lead by Alex Walton who has taught
the well-received e-Berkeley Effective Project Management Workshop which
more that eighty employees have completed. Alex is a systems engineer and
certified as Project Management Professional by the Project Management
Institute.

Benefits of the workshop include:

· Help sponsors step back and analyze their patterns of managing
people, information, and associated projects.

· Help sponsors think creatively about their environment, specific
projects, and current problems with which they are dealing.

· Give sponsors an opportunity to learn from each other.

The following modules, along with the participants special interests, are
woven into a four-hour workshop to help project sponsors become familiar
with good project management practices and principles being taught to
campus staff in the two-and-a-half day e-Berkeley Effective Project
Management Workshop. Topics covered include: project scope, planning,
execution, monitoring & control, and closure. Sponsor interactions at
project kickoff meeting, project reviews, and conflict resolution are
specifically addressed.

Workshop Modules

Module 1: Project Management Concepts and Basics describes project
management basics including the general process; balancing time, cost, and
scope; the project planning process; and common project management vocabulary.

Module 2: Project Objective: Purpose, Scope and Strategy describes tools
and techniques for clarifying project objectives - “How will we measure
success of this project?”

Module 3: WBS (Work Breakdown Structure) describes the fundamental project
planning tool, WBS, which breaks the project down into manageable pieces
and accounts for everything within the project - styles, deliverables and
tasks, and good techniques.

Module 4: Scheduling and Planning “Wrap Up” describes the basic methods
used from the development of a WBS to having a project schedule and
associated project plan elements.

Module 5: Monitoring & Control and Project Communications describes
communication styles and options; status and feedback reporting; and simple
effective project review formats and techniques.

Module 6 – Sponsorship Design is a review of “best practices” along with a
framework to discuss sponsorship requirements, actions and goals.

Module 7 – Sponsorship Implementation Planning is a mini “workshop” where
participants design and agree to their specific sponsorship requirements,
actions and goals.
