Disabling the Messenger service will disable all messages. This may have
ramifications with administered groups of computers where the message
service is used for legitimate purposes.
A trivial example is the UPS control software on my servers that sends a
broadcast message to my NT domain when the servers are about to be
shutdown to give people a chance to save work. My tape backup software
uses the messenger service to notify me of drive problems.
In an unmanaged peer-to-peer environment (offices without a central login
domain and pre-Active Directory) will probably not suffer problems by
disabling the service. You can always turn it back on. Make a note of what
has been done, especially if you get support from outside people!
There was some discussion of this on Micronet recently, as I recall.
