You're probably safe at putting optional content on the right side, but
what about a fluid design that isn't set at x pixels? There are so many
ways people can view web pages: 15" monitors never reset from factory
default of 640x480 or browser windows never/always maximized, for example.

Design decisions should be based on site mission and audience. I'd go with
whatever suits your needs.
