MCB uses Filemaker for our web-based online purchasing. We also use it
for some smaller applications such as the Graduate application and
Postdoc appointment requests. We use a program called Lasso
(http://www.blueworld.com/) as the intermediary. Our main webserver is
UNIX, but Lasso and Filemaker won't work on it so we run a second Mac
webserver (WebSTAR) just for the above applications. I'm not sure how
you would get it to work on a UNIX server since Filemaker won't run on
it. I imagine you would have to find some way using ODBC or JDBC.
Another method we use for our Department Directory
(http://mcb.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/directory.cgi) and Seminar listings is
to export the Filemaker data to the tab-delimited text file and transfer
it to the Webserver by FTP nightly. We use custom CGIs written in Perl
to access and display the data. This method is one way only (i.e.,
can't add or update information directly on the web).
