Last Friday several of us at Lawrence Hall of Science Technical Services
and Development attended the UC Davis Symposium on Enterprise
Portals. Slides from the presentation are available at
http://www.princeton.edu/~howard/slides/portals Depending on your browser
settings, they may look great or a rather muddy brown. (Internet Explorer
required.)
Howard Strauss, manager of academic computing at Princeton, presented a
very convincing case that Universities should be developing Enterprise
Portals. He emphasized the requirement for one portal with a single sign-on
per institution, in order for the portal to be efficient and thus
attractive to users. The shift from "institution centric" home pages to
"user centric" portals is the next logical step in the evolution in making
the web more efficient. Enterprise portals will contain content layers both
customized (based on user's identity) and personalized (based on the user's
preferences for additional content and appearance.)
With this model in mind, it does not make sense for departments to create
multiple campus portals; however, we do see a departmental role in
providing content to a UCB portal. We also anticipate major departmental
involvement in the campus portal design.
Have their been any discussions in your departments about looking ahead to
portal development?
