The System and Network Security (SNS) Office would like to bring this
serious threat to the attention of the campus community.
As described in the CERT Advisory this morning
http://www.cert.org/archive/html/coderedannounce.html
the Code Red worm and its variants are expected to begin proliferating
again at any time.
The Internet community is organizing a defense by asking every Windows
NT and every Windows 2000 user to go to the following link and follow
the instructions provided by Digital Island.
http://www.digitalisland.com/codered
Note that Windows 95, 98, ME, and Mac and Unix users are unaffected.
The System and Network Security Office will continue to contact the
responsible department security people with information about specific
hosts as it becomes available. As part of our precautions SNS may also
try scanning the campus network for the port 80 IIS web server
vulnerability. If we decide to do this, we will notify the campus via
this same set of mailing lists.
Questions or concerns should be addressed to security@berkeley.edu
Thanks,
Craig
