Colleagues —
I am writing to let you all know about some important changes in the
timing of the Career Compass Initiative, and to encourage all technical
staff and supervisors to visit the Career Compass website:
and review the information about the IT pilot mapping of several job
families to determine if, when, and how you should participate.
Work Thus Far
As you know, the original Career Compass plan identified all the
non-represented IT positions as the first major job family group to go
through the mapping process. This work was scheduled to happen this fall,
and the Career Compass team held numerous trainings for campus IT managers
as well as bi-weekly, well-attended open information sessions. Many of
you have participated as subject matter experts and provided critical
input and suggestions for improvement. Much of your input has been
incorporated into the language for each job family and has also initiated
the creation of several new IT job families.
Changes in Time line and an IT Pilot for Three Job Families
Based on your feedback, the time line for IT job mapping has been changed.
The priorities for the Career Compass team will be to publish all the job
fields and families for all non-represented positions by January 2008. In
addition, HR will be conducting a pilot this month with three smaller IT
job families to gain experience on the end-to-end mapping process. The
pilot mapping process will be for professional positions only in the
following three job families:
• Communication and Network Technology
• IT Security
• Quality Assurance-Release Management
A mapping time line for spring 2008 for all other non-represented
positions will be published before the winter holidays. Once all the
mapping has been completed, HR will then undertake a review of the
combined program and publish dates at that time for when the changes to
positions will be effective.
Call for Participation in the IT Pilots and Key Deadlines
If you or any of your staff or colleagues could potentially be mapped into
the professional levels of one of the pilot job families, I encourage you
to go to the Career Compass website and read the definitions of these
positions. The details can be found at
http://careercompass.berkeley.edu/jobstandards/mappingtool/infotech.html
The mapping period for these three IT families during the pilot is
abbreviated (45 days vs. 90 days) because we believe the families have a
very small number of incumbents (generally between 5 and 15 employees) and
45 days will allow us sufficient time to work with the limited number of
departments likely to have staff in these areas. The timely feedback on
the pilot mapping process will better inform our mapping rollout of other
job fields and families in January.
Departments and control units will have their own processes and time lines
for vetting the mapping submissions, so please contact your local
Department Human Resources Manager to learn about your own department’s
protocol. Completed job descriptions for professional employees in these
three IT families are due to HR Compensation by November 16, 2007.
Resources for Mapping Pilot
Updated job family matrices for all of the IT families except User
Experience Design (still in the comment period until October 8) are
available now at
http://careercompass.berkeley.edu/jobstandards/mappingtool/infotech.html.
These matrices have been updated to take into consideration feedback
received from the campus during the comment periods.
For questions about the levels and the job families, you can contact the
Comp Desk (compdesk_at_berkeley.edu) to reach Karen Berardi of the Career
Compass team. She will also forward many of these questions to IT subject
matter experts.
For questions about the pilot process, please contact Valerie Weller, a
CORE consultant on the Career Compass team. She can be reached at
510-414-2014 (cell) or 510-652-7563 (not a UC number).
For those of you who work in fields other than IT, I encourage you to
visit the Career Compass website for new information about all other job
families as well.
Open Sessions
If you have not yet attended an Open Information Session on Career
Compass, you can do so at the next session on October 9, 2:30–4:00 p.m.,
in 150 University Hall. For information about upcoming Open Sessions,
visit: http://careercompass.berkeley.edu/newsevents/events.html.
The campus has undertaken an ambitious and important project, one which I
believe will benefit all campus staff, and particularly members of the
technical community. I am grateful for your flexibility and partnership
in this effort. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Shelton Waggener
