Hello all:
It turned out that under the Setup, and under Drives, then SATA
Operation, SATA Raid On was the factory default setting. As soon as
I switched it to RAID Autodetect/ATA, then I could reformat the drive
and install XP. Thanks to all who sent me their suggestions.
