IST is examining the possibility of providing central system administration
services to support the growing number of Apple XServes on campus. Benefits
to departments interested in the program include extended hours of systems
support allowing departmental technical staff to perform other specialized
local functions while protecting servers in the robust central Data Center
environment.
Right now, we have been approached by some campus units interested in having
IST provide this service and are trying to gauge campus interest in this
service in a fairly short timeframe. If you think you might be interested
in a service offering like this, now or in the future, please email me by
Thursday, May 10th with the details and a phone number to reach you.
Service characteristics would include:
. You would co-locate your departmental Xserve(s) in the Hearst Data
Center.
. Your server would need to meet minimum hardware and OS requirements.
. System administration support will cover the hardware and OS.
. Cost is being evaluated, but we are interested in hearing what you
would feel would be an acceptable rate to pay for either standard 8-5 or
24x7 support.
. UCBackup is required (currently $.50 per gig per month data stored).
. Central storage on the Data Center high performance SAN would be
available at additional cost for departments with larger storage needs.
Thanks,
Ann Dobson
