Microsoft appears to have a website devoted to online "help and how to"
for the Office suite. Here's the help page for the Master Document
feature:

"Create a master document and subdocuments"
  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP051870021033.aspx

Thanks, Ted, for providing the name that describes this functionality in
word!
