D-Link Bluetooth Adapters purchased for Mac and PC

We tried to use a D-Link Bluetooth adapter that came from the Apple store
on a Dell PC. Since the D-Link product number was a PC and Mac compatible
we assumed it was just a question of downloading the correct PC specific
driver software to get the D-Link adapter to work.

We couldn't get the adapter to work and we were told that if the adapter
came from Apple that the product may have been modified to be only
compatible with Mac. Other USB products ( input devices, printers ) are
usually interchangeable between Mac and PC.

Has anyone encountered a sitution where Apple made an industry USB product
"proprietary" so that it would only work with Apple made products?

Thanks,
