Re: Eudora IMAP - sync/hang

David,

I find that when people start to have a certain magic number of messages
(e.g. over ~2,000 in one box), things don't work as well.
Especially if it is the primary inbox instead of a sub-folder.

The local email client has to compare all 2000+ messages in it's local
index file to mail server when it initially connects and each time it
checks for new messages.
On some clients (e.g. Netscape 4.7x) the index file for each mailbox
would occasionally get corrupted and need to be deleted and recreated.
I'm not sure how local indexes are stored on Eudora.

If you could get your power-users to keep less mail in each box (e.g.
copy to sub-folders "too-busy-to-deal-with-now"), then they would likely
see a big improvement.

IMHO Thunderbird works best against an IMAP mail server, especially for
large mail operations.
If the power-users are pushing the limits of the Eudora client, they
might enjoy using Thunderbird as an alternate.

Another thing you could try is to run error-checking and defrag (e.g.
right-click C: drive, choose "properties", then "tools" tab). It's
possible that they have some corrupt files associated with Eudora,
possibly due to a lot of re-indexing. I find this often fixes things
when a particular program keeps hanging.

Thanks,
Mike
