windows update problem

Hi All,

I have a machine that was just updated from Windows 2000 to Windows XP sp2.
the windows update will not run now.

the error message says go to IE, internet options, security, internet and
change the misc option of
userdata persistence to enabled. (error # 0X800A0046)

Of course this option is already enabled. I have tried every solution
offered by Microsoft and other web sites but nothing has worked.

Have any of you encountered this one and what will fix it.
