Dear CNS Voicemail Customers and Technical Support Units:

On December 3rd, 2005, Communication & Network Services (CNS) will upgrade
and enhance its legacy voicemail system. The current outdated voicemail
system will be replaced by a new Unified Communications system. The new
system will continue to offer basic voicemail services such as, receiving
and retrieving voice messages through the telephone. Additionally, we will
offer new Unified Messaging and Follow-me services. We have not yet
determined the exact date the system will change but anticipate that it
will be around the Thanksgiving timeframe.

This will affect 642-, 643-, 664- and 665- (Centrex) voicemail numbers.
This will NOT affect your work or personal cell phones, personal voicemail
systems, answering machines, etc. We have provided answers to some
frequently asked questions at
<http://unibears.berkeley.edu/faq.html>.

We are happy to announce that the rates for current voicemail services
will not change. Though all mailboxes will be changed to the new system
without changing the class of service, we encourage you to review the new
services because we feel they will better meet some of your needs.

As the new, advanced services are implemented, there may be an impact
on the campus technical support teams. For example, members of your
department may need your help in changing from POP to IMAP or installing
headsets on their computers so they can listen to voicemail messages over
the computer.

What you can do:

1) Become aware of the new services and their impact on your technical
units at
<http://unibears.berkeley.edu/cs/service/services-desc.html>.

2) Prepare to assist people in your department with the voicemail
change: <http://unibears.berkeley.edu/implementation/cutover.html>.

3) Forward this and future emails to everyone in your department so they
are well prepared for the new system in December.

4) Be an "early adopter"! We are inviting volunteers to become early
adopters of the new system around the beginning of November. If you'd
like to be an early adopter, please send email to
unibears-earlyadopter@lists.berkeley.edu with the subject "I want to be a
UniBears early adopter". Be sure to include your phone number in the email.

If you have any questions or comments, please send them to
unibears-info@lists.berkeley.edu.

CNS looks forward to this new system that will further improve
communications on the UC Berkeley campus.

You can read more about the Unified Communications project, called
UniBears, on our website <http://unibears.berkeley.edu>.

Thank you.
