Hi, Micronetters
I am sure everyone is aware of the following but I wanted to put it out,
just in case...
If you installed your firewall/anti-virus software from the C@B 2002
security disk you have version 1.1.1. There is a newer version that
apparently has spyware type protection. If you decide to download it for
an upgrade I would suggest you uninstall the previous version and
install the new one.
I pass this along because when you run the installer from the
downloadable version (software.berkeley.edu) and run the upgrade it does
tell you it "SHOULDN'T" have any problem with upgrading. Well, I ran it
and it ended up causing my system to slow down to a crawl. It left
behind files and directories for both the old and new versions.
It would not install properly nor would it completely uninstall. I ended
up attacking the registry to get rid of it (and not all entries will
delete even in safe mode). Then it finally installed clean but still
created and left behind dual directories. I deleted one that was older
and then ran it.
All seemed fine but the A/V icon would not show up on the tray. I ended
up creating a shortcut in startup for vptray.exe and then it worked just
fine.
Another note, I did try installing the old version back on after
removing everything that would go away but it refused. It now only lets
me install the new 2.0 version.
Anyway, I may have done something and/or had something installed Norton
did not like but it was a mess and that is why I recommend removing the
old and doing a clean install of the new, regardless....
Thanks,
Charles
