Here is a list of services and ports used to communicate with CalNetAD. The
settings are not specific to Active Directory and apply to most Windows
client/server traffic.

The NetBIOS services and ports are only needed if communicating with
pre-Windows 2000 machines.
<http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm> also has a guide for
Windows XP services.

I found a page that describes what Windows services are on by default, what they do, and what their dependencies are. It also has a recommendations on what's probably safe to turn off. In addition to the web page, there's also a downloadable zipped PDF that contains all this information (64pages). http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm If anyone has any options or some better links, please post. Maybe this can be included on the sns's best pratices site if people find it useful. -Ford ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The following was automatically added to this message by the list server: For information about Micronet, including subscribing to or unsubscribing from its mailing list and finding out about upcoming meetings, please visit the Micronet Web site: <http://micronet.berkeley.edu/>. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The following was automatically added to this message by the list server: For information about Micronet, including subscribing to or unsubscribing from its mailing list and finding out about upcoming meetings, please visit the Micronet Web site: <http://micronet.berkeley.edu/>.Received on Wed Jul 21 12:39:20 2004
