Word 2001 for Mac not showing menus

Hi
I've got a user who has Word 2001 for Mac running in Mac OS 9.0.4
The problem:
Though they can type in text, the menus don't work. There is nothing in
the drop down menus except for the Fonts and maybe a few others, but when
you try to click on anything at all in the menus, Word closes and this
error pops up...
"Microsoft Word has unexpectedly quit because of an error of type 2 occurred"

I've tried reinstalling the Word program again, but maybe I need to totally
remove the previous installation first. How is this done? Its been awhile
since I did Mac stuff, but I recall there was a particular method to it
rather than just deleting the folder...
Or, if anybody has seen this, or has any suggestions, let me know please
Thanks
Bill Gross
