RE: CalMail mailing list?

Colleagues,

IS&T created the http://systemstatus.berkeley.edu page as an alternative to
email or phone based status. The need was there in great part to assist in
situations when email or other notification were not available or timely.
While recognizing that for most of us email is one of the best methods of
communication (particularly for technology related issues), the possibility
of Calmail notifications being delayed or even contributing a problem in the
event of a virus or dns attack indicates the need for alternate updates.

We recognize that many of you are the primary point of contact for your
organizations on systems related issues and we want to provide you with the
most upto date and accurate information on outages possible. Calmail is a
new service and in spite of our best efforts it will likely suffer from
initial implementation pains like most new technology rollouts. We will
work to improve both the timeliness and quality of the postings on the
website and I would encourage anyone that has a suggestion on additional
communication strategies to contact me directly.

Thanks

Shel

Hi Ian,

I think the issue that Paul is referring to has to do with the timely-ness
of the notifications. Yesterday, when many were experiencing the slowdowns,
Neither the System Status web page nor the CalMail page at:

   https://calmail.berkeley.edu/

... noted the 2/4 slowdown problems. Today, while the above CalMail page
still does not mention the problems, the System Status page reads:

    CALMAIL: February 4, 2004 - Slow Response

CalMail users may experience slow performance due to efforts to

    stabilize the system.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The page also reads "The page will be updated whenever there is a change in
system status that will affect users for more than 15 minutes."

I don't believe that was true in this case (yesterday).

Hi Paul:

The current status of/problems with most centrally managed machines is
routinely posted at <http://systemstatus.berkeley.edu/>.

Hope this helps,

Ian

I know there are a lot of mailing lists already, but it seems to me that a
CalMail mailing list would be at least as useful as many of the other big
lists on campus. Or perhaps we could combine it

At the very least I would like to see timely posts to the existing lists
when there are problems with CalMail.

Thanks,
Paul
