Rusty,
We have a number of V* series Sun machines, and we use two different
solutions to get a console:
1) You can build a cheap BSD/Linux box, and then get a cheap multi-port
async card to get more ports if necessary. You can either tip or
minicom into your consoles as necessary. It's advisable to firewall the
heck out of your terminal server, since the lom allows you to power
cycle your machine etc. You should also password protect the lom.
2) In our larger server room, where we have many more machines, even
some x86 machines, we use a Cyclades Alterpath ACS console server
(http://www.cyclades.com). Since we needed so many ports for that
terminal server, the Alterpath didn't end up costing much more than a
home brewed solution. It offers some nice administrative features, and
the footprint is nice. Cyclades also sells nice async cards if you go
the build-it-your-self route.
Hope this helps,
Jon
