For wiping, I just boot with a floppy/cd for the computer, and reformat on
a PC, or reinitialize on a mac. We don't have sensitive data we need to
protect.
But if we did, and we had many drives to do, I wouldn't rely on tools
people have been mentioning. I would use something like this:

The good AC degausers are about $1600 or so.
And then if it was really secret, I'd destroy the drives physically using a
ball-peen hammer.
Doing something like this may seem excessive, but if you work at a bank or
at the UC employee records office where they have bank account information
and social security numbers - I really hope they do this. Otherwise
someone will pick up a server from salvage and recover account numbers
using file recovery utilities.
