Thank you. We tried the "less disruptive" route and saw the result.
Let's try the other way and see how this flies.

Perhaps (in our copious spare time...once the dust starts to clear) we
could "share the knowledge" by pooling resources and set up a
(centralized?) list of security FAQS/HOW-TOS for managers of end-user
systems. Links to good tutorials on how to secure a system (e.g. use
personal firewalls) would be welcome. (I hear XP has a firewall
built-in.) I'm sure that they (the tutorials) already exist on the
'net, so we aren't inventing the wheel here--at least not to start with.
(Later we can tailor them to campus/departments.)
EECS has already started somewhat down this path doing a great (IMHO)
job for general user issues with (sometimes site specific) answers on
such issues as e-mail and ssh keys. (see
http://iris.eecs.berkeley.edu/15-faq/10-unix/15-SSH_key.html for an
example) In a similar vein, some "how to secure my system" and "how to
secure my network" pages would be a great addition, even if they are not
"fully polished" at first, but just a link to tutorials at other sites.
