There are a variety of pages on the Web which provide instructions
on accessing characters in various European (and other) languages
from US keyboards. One of these which looks particularly helpful is
at Penn State:
http://tlt.its.psu.edu/suggestions/international/bylanguage/oenordic.html
This page, and pages linked from it, describe how it is possible
under Windows or the Mac OS to:
- Type the Danish-specific characters directly from a US keyboard
layout by pressing various keyboard combinations or key sequences.
This may work for your resident if they only need to occasionally
type these characters.
- Use a software feature of their OS to switch to a keyboard layout
which makes typing easier in their selected language, such as Danish.
For instance, when I switch to a Danish keyboard layout under
Mac OS X, the angstrom, slashed O, and AE characters are moved to
keys on the home rows, where they can be typed with a single keystroke.
(The custom key labels suggested by Al Stangenberger might come in
particularly handy after doing this ...)
