I'm not certain if SNS has chimed in on this topic yet. While these are
all useful tools, they are also the very same used by many of the
sinister entities roaming our networks.

These tools can create copious overhead on a network, and their presence
(or pattern) is often a signal that the network may be under attack.

I would suggest restricting the use of such tools to the subnet(s)
within one's own domain. We should not be probing networks outside of
our purview unless we have very good reason, and some sort of
notification would probably be in order, also.

For those folks that are used to the Unix version of nmap, there is a
Windows version available.

http://www.insecure.org/nmap/nmap_download.html

Just go down to the Windows (95/98/NT/ME/2K/XP) section and follow the
instructions, on any Windows box that I have installed this on I have to

install WinPcap as well. Version 1.3.1 of nmapwin seems to be very
stable
at this point, there seems to be a version 1.4 but the installed is
missing, last I checked.
