I would hazard a guess that most of the system administrators and IT user
support people are not HRMS users, just as they do not make heavy use of
BFS and BAIRS. But when a browser locks up or crashes, it is our help that
is requested first. It is not always easy to determine if it is a local or
remote problem, and even more knowledgable users are likely to call local
help first before escalating it to people they do not know. If we are not
in the dark we can do two things a) head off known problems and b) assist
in diagnosing and reporting fresh problems.

So, local admins and help staff are unlikely to see notices posted inside
systems they do not use. Micronet is a good route to the technical people.
Comp-mgrs is another. Magnet is more likely to reach the Mac community,
and the ucb.sysadmin news group might be the best route to Unix
administrators. Most of these resources are publicly searchable, which may
be an issue. http://inews.berkeley.edu:7077/ is a possibility. Though
following the HRMS item two levels did not show any hint of browser
restrictions.

A lot of this discussion would have been avoided if,
as admins and support people, we knew the limitations and could prepare
our people. Communicating to users is one thing, but do not skip the
people in the middle who have to install and maintain the tools you need
for these things to work. Please.

Campus staff are used to the ...quirks... of campus computing systems,
however irritating. The interface to the outside world is a whole
different issue.
