I tried out a few last time when Acer and Fujitsu were on campus. There
were a few problems that I saw:

-If you wanted to carry it comfortably, it would have to be small, and
thus have a small screen
-Viewable angle on some screens was pretty bad
-Battery life was horrible (2-3 hours). However, I was told that the
Centrino-based tablets would have 5-6 hour lifes.

All the recent ones you buy will be Windows XP Tablet PC edition, so it
needs no extra software (generally).
