We restrict users from installing anything, so the workstations could not
do anything useful with automatic update even if we left it on.

We do use it in notification mode on administrative test machines for
convenience. I usually see notifications from Microsoft and NTBugTraq as
well. We rank updates according to urgency and applicability, and aim to
catch up every couple of months with minor items. We often download larger
patches and updates to our library since it is a little faster and more
convenient.

We used HFNetCheck (the 'free' version) to push updates to workstations
prior to the recent Evans Hall power down. It took a while doing it two at
a time. We had a software shutdown script running in case someone forgot
to do a manual power off. It seems to have worked. Simply amazing.

I think Microsoft's regression testing is better these days. With NT
pre-SP5 there were a lot of dependencies. Now I do not see as many
conflicts. We are running a 2000/XP mix these days.
