Probably just something I'm not familiar with, so I had a
look at Google:

Do you have more information about his printer and how it's
networked? Is there maybe a VPN (Virtual Private Network) involved?
The University network at large isn't firewalled. Also, if
the remote printer has its own IP address (or is connected to a print
server with its own real IP address), then remote printing should
work fine. For example, just yesterday I printed to a campus HP
LaserJet from a computer at home...
