Attachments-not-showing has been the subject of several knowledge-base
articles. Q313316 and Q309493 are two fairly recent ones. They all suggest
downloading and installing the latest service packs.

-----Original Message----- From: owner-magnet-list@uclink4.berkeley.edu [mailto:owner-magnet-list@uclink4.berkeley.edu]On Behalf Of Greg Merritt Sent: Friday, September 27, 2002 5:14 PM To: magnet-list@uclink4.berkeley.edu; micronet-list@uclink4.berkeley.edu Subject: [MAGNet] disappearing Outlook .docs and .pdfs

We have an Outlook 2002 user who can't see certain attachments -- they just do not appear with the message. (Logging into bearmail confirms that the attachments were indeed correctly received by uclink in the first place.)

Now, these missing attachments are most notably *not* the automatically-blocked Outlook Level 1 attachments (.exe, .cpl, .bat, etc.). Such appropriately (well, that's debatable, but...) forbidden attachments give the nice little warning messages indicating that Outlook won't let you open them due to the security risk.

So, the "invisible" attachments with which we're having trouble don't give this warning -- viewed in Outlook, the messages simply look like they never had attachments to begin with.

Here's the combination that Outlook can't seem to handle:

o the attachments are .pdf and/or .doc files *only* o the original message was sent from Mac Eudora 5.1.x (classic or OS X) or Mac Eudora 4.3

The method of encoding doesn't seem to matter -- for example, switching to uuencoding doesn't do the trick.

Curiously, if, say, the tiniest .zip or .sit file is included alongside the .docs and/or .pdfs, then *all* of the attachments are completely visible! Wacky.

Since we have a Mac/Eudora user who must routinely send a bunch of .pdfs to this Outlook user, we've given her a dinky .zip file to include with every mailing. This isn't terribly elegant, but seems to work. Meanwhile, I'm curious to know if anyone can explain this behavior or offer a fix...?
