   At least in the case of the Micronet and MAGNet user group lists,
there is a modest set of list members who do not use .berkeley.edu
addresses.

   Examples include:

   - Several counterparts in computing support at other UC
     and Bay Area campuses (e.g. "ucsc.edu", "stmarys-ca.edu"),
     the Office of the President ("ucop.edu"), and UC Press
     ("ucpress.edu");

   - UC Berkeley affiliates who are away from campus on
     sabbaticals and other assignments and using their active,
     non-UC addresses ("harvard.edu"); and

   - Vendor representatives who materially contribute to the lists
     (e.g. our campus Apple reps at "apple.com", who are members of
     the MAGNet list).

   Allowing only list members to post to these lists might thus be a
more general (and inclusive) approach in combatting spam.
