Kurt,
For clarification, I think there were 2 keys for me. The first was to
un-check the "Automatically detect settings" box for the browser; this was
not done on my machine by the automatic configuration software. The second
key appeared to be patience. I can only speculate that the delay was due
to AT&T DHCP server capacity issues in allocating IP addresses when I
logged on during their system startup??? I am currently able to connect
from a cold boot almost instantaneously, so this does not appear to be an
issue. I don't know if it makes a difference, but I am also quite creative
in my swearing.

Have you also cycled the power on your cable modem? Power it down and
leave it off for a minute or so. I know it may sound stupid, but it has
worked for me in the past. Does the modem light for a cable connection
flash or is it continually lit? The light should be solid, indicating a
good connection to the world. I have had 2 modems go out in the last year;
both erroneously showed a good cable connection. Are you able to ping
anyone? Forgive me if you already know this, but go to Start, Run, and
type in 'ping 128.32.166.1' without the quotation marks. You should get a
reply, or you are not connecting to the world.
