In addition, Al Stangenberger wrote me that he suggested to Eric
Fong in a separate communication that he "first compact his
mailboxes, so that if there were troubles transferring a table of
contents, etc., his deleted messages would not be re-incarnated."
This sounds like very good advice, and I wanted to pass this along to
a larger audience.
To summarize the first document above:
The mailbox, filters, and address book ("nicknames") files used by
Eudora for the Macintosh are text files whose formats are also
recognizable by Eudora for Windows. If these files' line endings are
changed from the Mac's CRs to Windows' CR/LF, and if they are
appropriately renamed and copied to the correct locations, they can
also be used with Eudora for Windows.
Because mailbox 'table of contents' files are stored using binary
file formats which apparently are not capable of readily being
migrated in either direction between these two platforms, certain
information, such as the status information (read, unread ...) and
system or custom labels associated with individual messages in Eudora
mailbox windows, will not be retained during the migration.
