Hi,
We just moved to new offices and all of our network services are running
well with the exception of printing. We have six HP LaserJet printers
scattered around the building, each with its own direct Ethernet
connection and dedicated IP address. All printers are pinging
successfully at their appropriate addresses.
The bad news is that on the Mac side, the number of printers that show up
in the Chooser at any given time is between zero and two, inclusive. It
sometimes helps a little to restart the Macs and power cycle the
printers. When a printer does show up in the Chooser, we can create a
desktop printer and print to the printer. A couple of hours later,
however, the Mac suddenly can't find the printer any more. Is this a
problem with the printer configuration? Does ETALK need to be on? All
workstations and printers in question are on the same subnet. We are
running no AppleTalk zones.
Could this be a network issue? The Windows 98/2000 machines seem to be
holding their printer settings better than the Macs. Unlike the Macs,
most of the PC's can print to most of the printers most of the time. Some
of the printers have, however, become suddenly unavailable to certain PC
users, requiring us to delete and recreate their printer ports.
I'm cross-posting because I'm not sure how much of this problem is
specific to Macintosh.
Thanks,
Paul Ford
