A few months ago, one of our faculty reported problems with DSL. He was
using PacBell from a site within sight of campus and was having trouble
obtaining a usable shell connection to our servers and his own office
machine. Dial-up was fine, DSL to Princeton was fine (including an SSH hop
back to Berkeley).
We never investigated further, but we did speculate that there might be a
pathological worst case in the routing for the DSL-Berkeley link. In this
case the connections were made, they were just slow and unreliable.
Don't through out the modems just yet...
