Ted,
Thanks for the response. I apologise for not responding sooner. I tried
removing (uninstalling) Norton AntiVirus with no joy. The problem still
exists.
Our IS guy reinstalled WinNT & all apps incrementally to try to isolate the
problem, with the thought that some software installation might be the
cause...
He reformatted the disk, Installed WinNT (SP6) - Bang - the problem (delay
reading properties) showed up. It seemed to take 2-4 tries at right
clicking on the offending file before the computer began to exhibit the
symptoms. The preliminary attempts appeared to be normal - we immediately
got the menu & could display properties. Subsequent attempts resulted in a
delay between the rightclick & menu display (3-4 minutes). So it seems that
something in WinNT, and not with ArcView, other than this is the software
that creates the offending files.
Disabling or doesn't seem to do a thing. Actually, I misspoke in the
initial request. Some of the other computers exhibit the same problems.
These are generic clones - Pentium IIs, 64-128Mb SDRAM, WinNT. I have a
Sony Viao P-II 266Mhz Win98 laptop that seems to be immune to the problem.
I have found a cause for the problem I described about delays in ArcView
when loading a theme from folders contraining the index files. ArcView
reads the indexes in order to determine if they are in sync with the shape
files in order to refresh the indexes if needed. In my case the index
files are in sync, and the delay seems to be from trying to read the files.
As I noted, the problem exists only when the index files are on a remote
computer vs on a local disk.
Hopefully, this will provide some insight to you that we haven't figured
out. What process does the right-click in Explorer initiate that would
cause the delay?
