Hi Pat,
We have 4 subnets up here at SSL. I run a NT server to store all my
application binaries so I don't have to carry around any disks or
CD-ROMs as well as for app serving to specific groups. I do not have a
WINS server on each subnet so when I am working on a particular Windows
PC on a different subnet, I cannot directly see my NT server. This
presents a problem since I need to get connected to the server to use
it's resources. This is what I do to connect to my NT server on a
different subnet.
First, make sure that you have an account on the NT server which can
access the resources you need to get to. If you are connecting to a
Win95 or 98 computer, make sure that you have sharing turn on for the
resources you wish to share as well as password protecting them.
Then I go down to the 'Start' button at the lower left corner of the
screen, go to 'find' and then go to 'computer'. Then I put in the whole
name of the NT server that I wish to connect to. After a few seconds it
will locate the computer. Click on the computer name and it will either
ask you for the login and password, or just the password.
If it asks you for just a password, you will have to re-login to the
computer that you are working on and use the same login name. If the
password is different, the connection attempt will prompt you to enter
the correct one.
This work around should work for any Win9x, NT4.0, or Win2k. At least
it does for me up here.
Good luck!
