    Terre,

    I've used UltraEdit-32 (http://www.idmcomp.com/ or
http://www.ultraedit.com/) for many years, periodically renewing the
shareware license for newer versions. It does many of the things already
mentioned and some other neat tricks like having a column edit mode.

I'd like to examine a text file to see if there are any non-printing
characters in it which could be causing problems.

I've used a product before which had character window next to an (ascii?,
ansi?) hex and/or dec window but I can't remember what it was.

Can anyone recommend a product like this for use on NT? It can be an
editor or just a viewer. Preferably shareware but I'm willing to pay.
