This problem varies by ISP. For example, Compuserve2000 offers IMAP-based
e-mail accounts and authenticated SMTP servers so I can send and receive
e-mail via my cs.com account from any location. If you allow anyone to send
via your SMTP server, you risk becoming a relay point for spammers and
potentially being blacklisted by various e-mail vigilantes which will cause
even more problems for your users.

Subject: [Micronet] Why do uclink4/socrates smtp servers no longer send
from off-campus accounts?
I am amazed that the uclink4 and socrates smtp servers no longer support
off-campus (unauthenticated) accounts. This effectively locks out all
visiting scholars and faculty who use off campus accounts not to mention
faculty who check commercial accounts while on campus. Is there another
smtp server out there for these people to use? If not, this forces me to
run my own smtp server. Not a large task, but I'm surprised because I've
seen no warnings or messages regarding this. This abruptly cuts off a huge
population of email users.
