I'd also have to say that some precaution is better than none
at all, especially if you are really concerned about your machine
or data. If your data is really important, it should be backed up
at least once a week if not more often.
We actually had a case of a student having their laptop stolen from
one of our labs years ago. The student knew the MAC address so it
was relayed to the networking department. Sure enough, the person
who stole it plugged it right into their dorm room and the police
nabbed them within a day or so.
Granted, you probably can't expect the same results everywhere but
at least there are a few options. If someone is bound and determined
to steal your laptop or desktop, there may not be too much you can
do, but at least you can try to deter them and put in safeguards
to hopefully retrieve your machine.
I've also heard of a few cases where people put in scripts to have
their machine email them once a day. If it is stolen, the next
time it is connected to the network, you'll have the thief's
IP Address or at least their DSL/Network carrier. =p
Have a good weekend all,
Anthony
