“UC Berkeley’s Connecting_at_Berkeley CD to focus on Security”

UC Berkeley’s Information Services & Technology is pleased to
announce 2007 and 2008 release plans for the popular, award-winning
Connecting_at_Berkeley (C_at_B) CD.

WHAT IS IT?
The C_at_B CD is an essential accessory for protecting and connecting
your Windows or Macintosh computer at UC Berkeley; it is free to all
faculty, students, and staff. The installer software on the C_at_B makes
it easy for you to protect your computers from viruses and Internet
attacks; create settings to connect to the Internet via the campus’s
wireless, wired, and dial-up connections; and install programs to
securely check and send email, transfer files, and more. The CD comes
with a 16-page C_at_B booklet, which provides security information,
tips, and other resources.

WHAT’S NEW?
The release of the C_at_B CD for the 2007-08 academic year will take
place in two stages:

- A 2007.1 release at the start of the Fall 2007 semester.

This release is a modest update to the 2007.0 CD, released during the
previous academic year. One notable change is that the Eudora email
program is no longer included, because its vendor has discontinued
support – including security updates – for this product. The popular
open-source email program, Thunderbird, will be included on the CD.
More information on this change can be found in the iNews article
“Eudora users will need to migrate to a different email client” at
http://istpub.berkeley.edu:4201/bcc/Fall2007/1098.html

The Windows version will support Windows Vista, XP and 2000. The
Macintosh version will support Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.3 Panther.

- A 2008 release, later during the 2007-08 academic year.

This release will be focused on securing your computer and its data
and will include major updates to the security software on the CD.

The Windows version is expected to be available for downloading and
evaluation from http://software-central.berkeley.edu sometime during
the Fall 2007 semester, with a CD release following campus testing.
The Macintosh version is expected to be available later during the
2007-08 academic year, and will support Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. The
timing of both versions is dependent on the release of updates to
security products from Symantec Corporation.

WHERE TO GET IT?
Availability of the updated 2007.1 C_at_B CD and the forthcoming 2008
C_at_B CD will be announced to campus via numerous UC Berkeley mailing
lists, including Micronet, Webnet, MAGNet, Security, BPAWG, and
iNews. The CDs will be available at several campus sites:

* The Scholar’s Workstation, the campus computer store (http://
tsw.berkeley.edu/) at Hearst Field Annex, Bldg. D1 (behind Sproul Hall)

* IST’s User and Account Services (http://uas.berkeley.edu/) at 2195
Hearst Avenue, Room 111

* Student Computer Consulting Service (http://sccs.berkeley.edu/),
Moffitt Library, First Floor

* Library Reference Desks (http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/doemoff/
reference.html) in Moffitt Library, Third Floor, and Doe Library,
Second Floor

In addition, the most recent versions of the Symantec Client Security
(SCS) suite for Windows and Symantec’s Macintosh security products,
as well as many of the other products included on the C_at_B CD, can be
downloaded individually from Software Central (http://software-
central.berkeley.edu/) after CalNet ID login.

FUTURE PLANS
Beginning during the 2008-09 academic year, IST is planning to move
UC Berkeley’s security software distribution to an online model and
to phase out the physical C_at_B CD. This new distribution model may
include offering CD-burning kiosks at The Scholar’s Workstation and
Student Computer Consulting Service in Moffitt. Discussion and
planning, including opportunities for campus involvement, will take
place over the coming months, and information about this planning
process will be shared as more is known.
