Re: "file name is too long" message

This seems to be of the Windows PC Server nature. Although, with Win2000
and up, the long file name was supported, it has its limitations. The "8.3"
format still exists here -- that is 8 character filename and 3 character
extension. As well, the rules about illegal characters (The illegal DOS and
Windows file name characters are as follows: ? [ ] / \ = + < > : ; "
, ) still apply, so these cannot be present on the Windows side. I find
I have this problem when I use my USB flash drive (which is by default
formatted for Windows). When I try to copy files to I will sometimes get
your message or a false message that my permissions are correct. For you, a
good test would be to rename a troubled file to an 8 character/3 character
extension format and see if it still has a problem.
