iMac sleep and weird sound problem

Hello all:

I'm writing here before I submit a work request with the Hardware Support
folks, so here goes.

I have a user who has a 17" iMac, 1.8Ghz, 512MB RAM who purchased it in
March. Just recently, a problem started in that whenever it was not used
for a while it would go into "sleep" mode (screen goes black) and then a
little while later a high-pitch "whiny" sound would start, similar to a
small fan being revved up way too high for it's capacity. Clicking on the
mouse or any other key would not "wake" the computer up and the only way to
get any functionality back is to power it down and re-start it. I'm
assuming that it's under warranty still, but wonder if anybody else has
experienced this before, of if we're just cursed? Thanks.

eric
