lazy Multiscan monitor

My Sony Triniton Multiscan G400 monitor has gotten lazy in its old
age and won't wake up from powersave mode without a huge amount of
persuasion including multiple restarts and disconnecting/reconnecting
from/to the cpu (G5 @ 10.4.3; connecting cable includes an Apple
adaptor for the G5). Reset button has always been something of a
joke.

Sony no longer supports this product, which is approx 6 years old.
Any ideas short of buying a new monitor?
