server connections for macs off campus

I'm trying to find some clarification somewhere.

I know that PCs need to use the VPN client in order to connect to
fileservers on campus. Does that include connecting to Mac OS X
Servers running SMB? Can Macs connect to Mac fileservers on the
campus without using the VPN client?
