LBNL recommended SSP Data repair (215-3425) for our HP 4100dtn which
had a hard-to-diagnose problem. The guy who came was brilliant, and
had worked with MANY kinds of printers, but he already knew about
this idiosyncratic problem. This after 4-5 other repairmen visits...
We almost salvaged that HP4100 because it caused so much trouble.
But since he fixed that one issue, everything has worked smoothly
since.
However, we had already replaced the HP with our Xerox 4500dt--and
the reliability of this Xerox printer is fantastic. We've had it for
about 18 months now. We did have one problem at the beginning, and
Xerox quickly diagnosed it over the phone, sent the part, and we just
swapped it in (which is how those printers are designed). Also
on-line diagnostics are cross-platform (HPs work with Windows
only--based on ActiveX), and very thorough. When I was
printer-shopping, the Xerox printers had the top reliability--but
they do cost more.
