Re: backup software for mac osX

It may sound heretical, but I stopped using desktop backup software
several years ago, after using Retrospect faithfully for years. What
changed is that I bought a SmartDisk FileLite hard drive that is
Firewire enabled. This 20GB drive is small enough to fit in a shirt
pocket.

I have made 2 partitions on the drive: one for desktop backup and
one to use as a portable workspace when I work from home. I just
copy my active folders onto the drive. The Firewire speed makes this
pretty painless. The process seems easier than using a backup
product. It has worked well for 3 years.

Despite the fact that I have thousands of files, I am nowhere near
using up my 20GB. (I don't backup my apps -- just my System Folder,
my huge accumulation of data files, some key updaters, and a few
other things.)
