Norton AntiVirus 10.0 for Mac OS X now available

Norton AntiVirus (NAV) 10.0, the latest version of the campus's
site-licensed anti-virus software for Mac OS X, is now available for
downloading from the WSS Software website:

   http://software.berkeley.edu

This new version is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 ("Tiger") and Mac
OS X 10.3 ("Panther"). The previous version of NAV, 9.0.x, has
several incompatibilities when running under Tiger, most notably that
the on-access scanner ("AutoProtect") is disabled.

Version 10.0 also offers three relatively minor new features, which
are described in a recent Symantec press release at:

   http://www.symantec.com/press/2005/n050510.html

This new version of NAV features a "Global Threat Assessment
dashboard" widget for Tiger which displays the "three most recent and
the three most critical virus threats on both the PC and Mac
platforms," as well as indicating AutoProtect's status and the date
of the last virus definitions update. (Under Panther, which lacks
support for Dashboard widgets, you can view the AutoProtect status
and the date of the last virus definitions update in the
application's main window.)

Version 10.0 also adds Contextual Menu options for conveniently
scanning files and directories. And it offers the option of
designating "Safe Zones" that are excluded from virus scanning, a
feature which appears from Symantec's press release to be aimed at
customers who routinely work with large multimedia files. (Let's hope
malware can't readily exploit this new capability ;-).

You're encouraged, as always, to send reports of any problems you
encounter or other experiences with this software to the MAGNet list.
Central technical support for this product is available through the
usual Connecting@Berkeley-related channels
<http://wss.berkeley.edu/help.html#connecting>.
