Another recently-added FAQ entry covers an issue that may affect a
small number of Norton AntiVirus 9.0.x for Mac OS X users who upgrade
to Mac OS X 10.3.9, after which they may encounter a "Microdefs
Error" message when attempting to update virus definitions via
LiveUpdate:

>Mac OS X 10.3.9: Norton AntiVirus's LiveUpdate feature reports
>"Microdefs Error. LiveUpdate had an error updating the virus
>definitions" when you attempt to update virus definitions (April 20,
>2005, updated April 21, 2005)
>
> Solution: Use your existing copy of LiveUpdate to download an
>update to LiveUpdate version 3.0.3 or later, which resolves this
>problem. Until you can do so, or if this doesn't work for you, a
>workaround is to manually update your virus definitions by
>downloading and installing the latest Intelligent Updater file from
>the Symantec website.
>
> Details: After updating to Mac OS X 10.3.9, some users began
>encountering the error message "Microdefs Error. LiveUpdate had an
>error updating the virus definitions", after which the downloading
>stops. LiveUpdate is still able to download product updates.
>
> The MacInTouch website notes that Norton AntiVirus's vendor,
>Symantec Corporation, suggests that you take the following steps to
>resolve this problem:
>
> 1. Open the Norton AntiVirus application.
> 2. Click the LiveUpdate button.
> 3. Click the Customize this Update Session button.
> 4. When a list of available updates appear, remove check
>marks from all products except LiveUpdate.
> 5. Select (click on) LiveUpdate in the list, and make sure
>that the name and/or description that appears mentions version 3.0.3.
> 6. Click Update.
> 7. When the Summary window appears, quit LiveUpdate.
>
> Until you can update your copy of LiveUpdate, or if for some
>reason the steps listed above don't work for you, you can also use
>the temporary workaround of manually downloading and installing the
>latest Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh 9.x Intelligent Updater file
>from that company's website, which will update your virus
>definitions. (You will need to periodically check for updates to
>that file and download new versions until you can resolve this
>problem.) The following article provides details about how to do so:
